September 4, 1927-December 26, 2014

Ken (a.k.a. “K.J.”, “Kentucky,” “The Silver Fox,” “Poppa”) passed away peacefully in his 88th year. Born in Toronto to Percival and Emily (Bishop). Married for 67 years to his beloved wife, Margaret (Hyland), Ken was loving father of Janet Blanken (John), Judy Nailer (Rod), Jim (Lisa Morgan), Joel (Mary Manning), John (Peggy Taylor-Winter), Justin (Beth Munnings) and Peggy Pitawanikwat (Bernie Corbiere). Loving grandfather to Deanna (Chris), Denise (Joe), Tamara (Jason), Laurel (Eric), Sean (Nicole), Andy (Michelle), Kieran, Kaeleigh, Aidan, Isaac, Annalee (Ian), Julia (Andrew), Mollie, Benjamin, Alice and Ashley. Ken’s great grandchildren are Alex, Marina, Sophia, Isabella, Logan, Thomas, Hunter, Lily, Casey, and Natalia. Ken is survived by his brother, Jack (Olga), nieces Kathy and Debbie (Monty) and nephew Jeff (Maryanne).

Ken was a tow truck driver (age 14), salesman extraordinaire who travelled throughout Ontario and the Maritimes, entrepreneur, hobby farmer, chef, restaurateur, school bus driver, inventor, humorist, poet, pianist and golfer.

Ken’s life-long love of sales included everything from pianos to institutional food products, bakery equipment to web-sling and wire rope products, his own inventions to real estate. He invented countless products and concepts; constantly amazing us with his intuition and enthusiasm. Ken’s many talents and wit kept family and friends entertained if not “in stitches.” He played piano from age five and, for good measure, also played his teeth. He published two books of his own poetry.

Ken and Marg met and worked together at Heinzman’s Pianos in Toronto. They raised their children on the “Six J’s Farm” in Kettleby. Stories abound of “the farm” and “the pond.” They also lived in Schomberg and Pottageville and developed many close friendships in those communities as well as in Bradford, where they shopped, golfed and bowled. Ken and Marg spent happy years of semi-retirement in New Smyrna Beach/Edgewater, Florida. During their snowbird years Ken and Marg spent summers on Dummer Lake near Judy and Rod before moving to Midland (1997) and then Penetanguishene (2003) near John and Peggy.

To the end Poppa always said his favorite child was:

John Winter.
Janet,
Judy,
James,
Joel,
Justin,
Peggy

Ah, shucks, I guess he loved us all the same…

A casual celebration of Ken’s life will take place from 1 - 3 p.m. with words of remembrance at 2 p.m. on Tuesday December 30th at the Penetanguishene Funeral Home, 155 Main Street, Penetanguishene, ON.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society, Diabetes Association or the Georgian Bay General Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.
